This superb example is a vet-art painted M40 Luftwaffe single-decal helmet, originally produced as a Quist Q66 and later transformed into a remarkable battlefield trophy by a U.S. soldier of the 29th Infantry Division. Among veteran-painted helmets, this is truly one of the finest and most historically meaningful pieces to surface in recent years.
Directly sourced from the veteran’s grandson, John Ty Amrhein of McGaheysville, Virginia, the helmet carries an authentic bring-back story. Although promised photographs and service documents were never forwarded, the helmet itself — through its construction, markings, and artwork — clearly preserves the dual narrative of its German frontline service and its American postwar transformation.
German Wartime Background
Factory-made in 1940, this Quist M40 (lot number 8102) left the factory with:
- Smooth RAL 7016 blue-grey enamel interior
- Lightly textured Luftwaffe exterior paint
- A single Quist-pattern Luftwaffe decal
For several years, the helmet likely served with Luftwaffe ground personnel stationed behind the lines in France or Belgium.
As the war situation deteriorated after Stalingrad, Göring’s reserve Luftwaffe personnel were reorganized into Luftwaffe Ground Force Divisions (1944). It was at this point, during emergency redeployments, that this M40 was reissued.
