This is a truly exceptional discovery — a gigantic size CKL71 Fallschirmjäger M38 helmet, untouched and all original, found at a South Carolina estate sale. According to Brian Ice’s lot data book, Lot 4054 helmets were produced in late 1943 and are represented by only eight known examples. Of those, seven are the smaller CKL68 size, making this CKL71 an extraordinarily rare survivor.

Key Features

  • Model: M38 German Fallschirmjäger helmet
  • Maker: CKL (Eisenhüttenwerk Thale)
  • Size: 71 (largest size manufactured, extremely scarce)
  • Lot Number: 4054 (only 8 recorded; this being the sole CKL71 example documented)
  • Paint: Original wartime finish, excellent exterior condition with minimal rust
  • Liner: Original and complete, though fragile from age and storage
  • Bolts: All four retaining bolts present and untouched
  • Unique Detail: Pronounced raised front rim, a distinguishing feature of Lot 4054 production

Collector’s Analysis

  • Rarity: Size 71 M38 helmets are among the rarest German helmets, with very few surviving examples.
  • Provenance: Direct estate find, untouched since the war era.
  • Condition: While the liner shows deterioration, the exterior remains exceptionally well-preserved, enhancing display appeal.
  • Market Value: The rarity of this size and lot number far outweighs the condition issues, making it a standout piece in any Fallschirmjäger or elite German headgear collection.
  • Notable Ownership: Sold for $3,650; previously held by Hollywood producer B. Hogan (who tragically died in a plane crash in 2022).

Historical Context

  • The M38 helmet was the signature headgear of the German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers), designed to provide enhanced protection during airborne operations.
  • By late 1943, production emphasized efficiency while retaining the helmet’s distinctive low-profile design.
  • Large-size helmets (CKL71) were produced in extremely limited numbers, making them highly sought after among advanced collectors.
  • The Lot 4054 examples are especially notable for their raised front rim, giving the helmet a unique and striking profile.
