A remarkable find straight out of Carlsbad, New Mexico, sourced from a veteran-related family. Helmets in size 68 are inherently rare, and an early-war M35 example of this size is even more exceptional. This particular helmet likely dates to circa 1940, evidenced by the thick, rounded chinstrap bales, a transitional feature between the M35 and early M40 factory liners.

Description

  • Shell: M35, EF68 production, large size 68, smooth enamel texture with subtle factory-applied finish.
  • Liner & Chinstrap: Original transitional liner intact; thick rounded style chinstrap bales, typical of early-war production.
  • Decals: Heer eagle decal appears to have been lost over time, possibly due to improper sealing at the factory.
  • Lot Number: 3942 (corresponds to Brian Ice’s lot data book, linked to mud camo helmets; while not the exact helmet in the reference, this one shares the same lot).
  • Camo/Texture: Features baked-on splotches of mud, likely applied for field concealment. The darker organic portion has worn off over time, leaving hardened clay traces. Testing with a soft brush confirmed that these remain firmly adhered to the surface.
  • Condition: Rock-solid all original; no rust, dents, or cracks. Dry New Mexico climate likely contributed to the excellent preservation.

Collector’s Analysis

  • Rarity Factor: Large-size M35 helmets are exceptionally hard to find; early-war transitional EF68 examples are even rarer.
  • Display Potential: A striking addition to any collection, especially for early-war Heer enthusiasts or collectors focusing on transitional M35-M40 variants.
  • Authenticity: Original mud splotches indicate field-applied camouflage, enhancing battlefield provenance. All features appear consistent with factory production and wartime use.
