The M42 helmet was introduced in 1942 as a simplified successor to the M35 and M40 designs. Designed for rapid wartime production, the M42 eliminated the rolled edge of earlier models and featured a stamped ventilation hole instead of the welded grommets. This model was widely issued to Waffen-SS and SS Security Service (SD) personnel, often seeing frontline combat.
Description
This is a textbook SS M42 helmet produced by EF (Eisenhüttenwerke, Thale) in size 68, a large shell. The helmet retains:
- Original matte paint, typical of Waffen-SS finish
- EF68 rear lot stamp indicating factory and size
- Interior leather liner in good original condition
- Original chinstrap, marked and intact
The Waffen-SS decal is present on the left side, showing the classic runes in silver on black field, while the right side shield may be partially faded or removed, consistent with wartime wear and de-Nazification efforts.
Collector’s Analysis
- Rarity Factor: EF68 large-size SS helmets are less common due to fewer large shell orders and frontline losses.
- Condition: Honest wartime wear, with original liner and chinstrap intact, making it highly desirable for collectors.
- Display Potential: Excellent for SS-focused collections, historical display, or museum-quality presentation.
